Overview

WinRAR, from RARLAB, is the reference implementation of the RAR format. It is trialware: the download works indefinitely but displays a purchase reminder after the 40-day evaluation period, and a license is required for business use.

The features that justify paying are specific. Recovery records let a damaged archive be repaired without the original. Solid archiving squeezes large sets of similar files harder than standard ZIP. And, unlike free archivers, WinRAR can create RAR and RAR5 archives, not just read them.

For simple ZIP and 7Z work, free tools cover the same ground. WinRAR earns its place when you exchange RAR archives with people who expect them, or when archive resilience matters.

How to install WinRAR

  1. 1. Download the right build

    On rarlab.com/download.htm choose the 64-bit English build unless you specifically need 32-bit.

  2. 2. Install

    Run the installer and approve the UAC prompt.

  3. 3. Choose associations

    The setup screen lets you pick which archive types WinRAR opens. If you also use 7-Zip, associate WinRAR with RAR only.

  4. 4. Add your license

    If you purchased a license, place the rarreg.key file in the WinRAR program folder as instructed by RARLAB.

How to use it

  1. 1. Create a RAR archive

    Right-click your files, choose Add to archive, set the format to RAR5, and adjust the dictionary size if you are compressing very large data.

  2. 2. Add a recovery record

    In the Add dialog, open the Advanced tab and set a recovery record percentage — 3% is a common choice for archives stored long term.

  3. 3. Repair a damaged archive

    Select the archive, then Tools > Repair archive. Repair only succeeds if a recovery record exists or the damage is limited.

  4. 4. Protect with a password

    Use Set password in the Add dialog and enable Encrypt file names for RAR5 archives.

Safety and privacy

  • Download only from rarlab.com or win-rar.com. WinRAR is heavily impersonated by third-party download sites.
  • Archive parsers have historically been a source of vulnerabilities in every archiver, WinRAR included; running a current version matters.

The official installer does not bundle third-party software.

WinRAR operates locally. Licensing is handled with a key file rather than an online account.
